Newark - A federal grand jury has indicted five Orange, New Jersey, police officers in the beating to death of a man wrongfully suspected of the April 1999 murder of a policewoman, officials said yesterday.
The office of the US Attorney in Newark, New Jersey, said arrests in the case were made yesterday but no further details would be released until a news conference later in the day.
Earl Faison was beaten to death after being picked up during a manhunt for the killer of Officer Joyce Carnegie, who was shot dead on April 8th, 1999, as she questioned a man about reported muggings. A patrolman said Mr Faison, who was handcuffed, was beaten by officers at police headquarters before he died, local newspapers reported at the time. Condell Woodson was later arrested and charged with the murder of Ms Carnegie.
