Luanda - Angolan police and troops used horses and dogs to drive residents out of a Luanda slum yesterday and began destroying their homes in an attempt to move 50,000 people out of the city, witnesses said.

Journalists and a lawyer representing residents of the hillside neighbourhood known as Boavista were prevented from entering the area.

It had been barricaded by about 100 police and soldiers brandishing rifles, tear gas canisters and batons, the witnesses said.
