A Belfast girl who was hit in the mouth by a plastic bullet was awarded £27,500 compensation yesterday. Ms Maire Walsh (15), from Bingnian Drive, Andersonstown, lost two front teeth and has been left with a scar on her lip.
The plastic bullet was fired by a policeman during widespread disorder after the Drumcree Orangemen were allowed to march along the Garvaghy Road in July 1997. The action against the RUC was settled out of court and the amount of damages was approved by Mr Justice Sheil.
