The pine marten, believed to be a native species to Ireland, has suffered greatly at the hands of man, most notably when it was hunted for its pelt in the 16th and 17th centuries. Its numbers are now increasing, according to the EPA, and recent expansion means its survival is considered "secure". A ban on the laying of strychnine is understood to have helped its re-colonisation.
