A controversial feminist writer who had been in hiding for years following Islamic death threats gave herself up yesterday to the Bangladesh High Court in Dhaka.

Judge Kazi Ebadul Huq granted Taslima Nasreen bail after a halfhour hearing. The judge did not set a trial date.

It stemmed from a warrant for her arrest over a complaint that she had outraged Islamic sentiments by "blasphemous" remarks in her books. The warrant was originally issued before she fled the country in 1994.
