A controversial feminist writer who had been in hiding for years following Islamic death threats gave herself up yesterday to the Bangladesh High Court in Dhaka.

Judge Kazi Ebadul Huq granted Taslima Nasreen bail after a halfhour hearing. The judge did not set a trial date.

It stemmed from a warrant for her arrest over a complaint that she had outraged Islamic sentiments by "blasphemous" remarks in her books. The warrant was originally issued before she fled the country in 1994.

British actress Kate Winslet, co-star of the blockbuster movie Titanic, married assistant film director Jim Threapleton yesterday in a low-key ceremony marked by tight security. Bouncers checked invitations at the door of the family's local church in Reading, Berkshire.

Winslet (23) met 24-year-old Threapleton last year in Morocco on the set of Hideous Kinky, which is yet to be released.
