A 19-year-old Ukrainian immigrant was convicted yesterday of murdering comedian Bill Cosby's son Ennis after a jury deliberated for less than six hours.

Mikail Markhasev was also found guilty of attempted robbery and faces a sentence of life in jail for the January 16th, 1997, murder on a darkened roadway just off a major freeway in Santa Monica, California.

Prosecutors charged that Markhasev murdered Cosby during a botched robbery while the 27-year-old Columbia University student was changing a flat tyre on his mother's Mercedes convertible. They said Markhasev wanted money for drugs but defence lawyers claimed that another man, a friend of Markhasev's named Eli Zakaria, was the real killer.

Cosby attended the trial for the first time yesterday. He sat with his wife, Camille, and their daughters, Errin and Erika, in the front row of the Santa Monica courtroom not far from Markhasev's mother and grandmother to hear closing arguments.
