The Government has this evening announced a total review of national flooding policy because of what it says is the increasing frequency of the problem.

The Minister of State at the Department of Finance, Mr Tom Parlon, said he has had discussions with the Taoiseach about the need to establish a humanitarian aid scheme for victims of severe flooding in Cork.

Mr Parlon said he was making arrangements over the next few days to assess the extent of the damage in the city.

Meanwhile, roads in many parts of the country, particularly in the East and South, today remained flooded and Met Éireann says more heavy showers tonight and tomorrow can be expected.

The flooding caused causing severe delays into Dublin, Kilkenny and Cork.

According to AA Roadwatch, all major routes into Cork city are flooded and motorists should check local conditions before embarking on any journey, especially in the Bandon area.

The Blackpool area of Cork was badly affected by overnight flooding. Gardaí say roads in the area are under four feet of water and it is impossible for most vehicles to get through.

The water level on roads in Inchicore Village is rising, and the village itself is starting to flood, however the road still passable.

Gardaí in Kilkenny have warned that the River Nore has burst its banks and motorists should stay away from the Johns Quay area. The fire brigade are understood to be issuing sandbags to householders.

Meanwhile, a number of Irish Ferries sailings between Dublin to Hollyhead have been cancelled.
