A Palestinian child was killed and three others hurt when they picked up a pair of boxing gloves that exploded and may have been booby-trapped, Palestinian witnesses and hospital officials said.

The witnesses said the boy, believed to be about 12, picked up the gloves from the ground where they had been lying in an area close to the border between the Gaza Strip and Egypt.

Earlier, an elderly Palestinian woman died from breathing tear gas after Israeli soldiers fired a cannister, a Palestinian hospital official said.

Neighbours said Ms Khairiah Khalil Salah (70) was in her home in the village of Jaba, when Israeli soldiers came to make arrests. They said villagers resisted the arrests and soldiers fired tear gas.

An Israeli army spokeswoman said there were stone-throwing clashes in Jaba early today and that soldiers used riot-dispersal means.

She said two Israeli officers were hurt, but she knew nothing about Ms Salah's death.
