The Garda investigation into the theft in Co Monaghan of the car used in the Omagh bombing on August 15th has largely been completed, according to Garda sources. The detectives from Dublin and Border divisions have returned to normal duties. The explosion killed 29 people and seriously injured more than 200. It is believed the bombing was directed and organised by republicans living in the north Louth and south Armagh areas.
During the Omagh investigation, gardai accumulated a large amount of information about the dissident group responsible, the "Real IRA".
