THERE HAS been furious reaction in Killarney to an apparent decision by the National Roads Authority, (NRA) to construct a roundabout near a HSE owned land bank near the N22 - much of which is about to be sold for development - while calls for a roundabout to alleviate severe traffic problems for residents just over a kilometre away has been rejected several times.

The roundabout which will facilitate access to the 40 or so acres at St Finan's Mental Health facility towards the west of the Killarney bypass has been agreed in principle the town manager John Breen told a special roads meeting of Killarney Town Council this week. The revelation, in a letter to Mr Breen from the NRA came as a complete surprise to councillors and has provoked stinging criticism.

The NRA pledges to work closely with local authorities, but in this case it had not even consulted with them, councillors said.

Just weeks ago the NRA had dismissed the latest in a series of calls by the town council for the provision of a roundabout on the opposite eastern extremity of the N22 bypass to alleviate gridlock.
