One hour ferry trips from Northern Ireland to Scotland halving the crossing time - are to be introduced in early June, it was announced yesterday. P&O European Ferries is bringing in a fast ferry capable of carrying 600 passengers and 160 cars.

The £20 million ferry, which is being chartered, will operate six return crossings a day between Larne and Cairnryan. The ferry, capable of 35 knots, is being built in Bergen in Norway. It will operate alongside the existing P&O car and freight ferries, which take two hours to make the crossing.
