Mobile phone maker Nokia is to replace up to 14 million chargers after it was discovered that they put customers at risk of an electric shock.

However, Irish phone users are not affected by the recall, which came from Chinese supplier BYD.

Nokia said it would exchange three models affected by the recall - AC-3U, AC-3E and AC-4U types manufactured by BYD between April and October 2009. Those who suspect they may have one of these models can check if they are part of the exchange programme at chargerexchange.nokia.com.

"We have determined that the plastic covers of the affected chargers could come loose and separate, exposing the charger's internal components and potentially posing an electric shock hazard if certain internal components are touched while the charger is plugged into a live socket," Nokia said in a statement on its website.

"While we are not aware of any incidents or injuries related to the affected chargers, as a precautionary measure, we will exchange affected charger models free of charge."

Nokia Ireland said the chargers had not been sold domestically to Irish users.

"The Charger Exchange Program only applies to a limited number of chargers of certain models and these models have different plugs and pins than are used in Ireland," the company said.

However, those who have bought a charger overseas can use the charger exchange website to establish if it needs to be replaced.
