The head of the Nigerian Anglican Church said today it would not recognise the church's first gay bishop consecrated in the United States.

A statement by the Most Reverend Peter Akinola, on behalf of the "Primates of the Global South" which represents two-thirds of the world's 70 million Anglicans, said they "cannot and will not recognise the office or ministry of Canon Gene Robinson as a bishop".

Rev Akinola said the group did not believe the US EpiscopalChurch would pay attention to the findings of a Anglicancommittee intended to resolve the crisis.
