A Co Tyrone man was jailed for life yesterday after a jury at Enniskillen Crown Court found him guilty of murdering and raping his wife near her home at Ballysaggart outside Dungannon.

Anthony Joseph Conlon, with an address at Clonmore Gardens, Omagh, stabbed his wife Fiona outside her home on March 3rd last year. The court was told he drove a sharp knife almost to the hilt into her back. Conlon then dragged her into a field and raped her. But he told investigating police she wanted to have sex with him.

He concocted a story that he had been attacked by a hooded assailant while he and Mrs Conlon were making love.

After he had finished with her, he dressed her, carried her over a gate and placed her in a stream. Mrs Conlon was found drowned on the morning of March 4th.
