Newcastle 1-0 Basel (Agg 4-2)
Newcastle United made no mistake against Swiss club FC Basel this evening, winning 1-0 to reach the UEFA Cup third round 4-2 on aggregate.
The Magpies held a 3-2 lead from the first leg in Switzerland and increased their advantage after 13 minutes when Boris Smiljanic turned a Laurent Robert cross into his own net.
Basel had plenty of chances to get back into the tie and Newcastle goalkeeper Shay Given made great saves to deny Marco Streller and Mario Cantaluppi before the break.

But Newcastle, who were knocked of the Champions League at the preliminary stage, were far from convincing and had another escape when Hakan Yakin's free kick struck a post.
