MR Fred Hayden has been appointed regulator for premium rate telephone services in Ireland.

He has been chief executive of the Association of Advertisers in Ireland since 1986 and was nominated by the Director of Consumer Affairs in consultation with the Department of Transport, Energy and Communications.

Mr Hayden replaces Judge Mary Kotsonouris who, as the first regulator, put in place a code of practice governing the content and promotion of premium rate services. This also established a structure for regulation.

In accepting the invitation to become regulator, Judge Kotsonouris indicated that she could not serve longer than a year.
