London - Mrs Manjit Kaur Basuta has been charged with killing an American child. Mrs Basuta (43) had moved with her husband from Berkshire, in southern England, to California, and opened a day nursery at their home in San Diego. On March 17th this year Ms Audrey Amaral dropped her son Oliver off at the Basutas' before she went to work. Just after lunchtime, Oliver suffered massive head injuries and died. The Medical Examiner's Office found he had a subdural haematoma beneath his skull and massive brain swelling because of the bleeding.
The murder trial, which begins after Christmas, will turn on the evidence of a third woman, Ms Christina Carillo, an illegal immigrant and the Basutas' housemaid.
