Being a child of the Seventies, I associate Nana Mouskouri with the appalling impression that the woeful Benny Hill frequently did of her. This is a shame because Mouskouri is the number one selling artist in the world, bar none. Mariah, Whitney and other aspiring divas would do well to remember this.
Her voice stills exudes an effortlessness that reveals her classical training and she delighted her silvery-maned audience with an array of optimistic love songs such as White Rose of Athens and a resounding rendition of The Three Bells.
The highlight came when Nana performed Smoke Gets in Your Eyes. This is a bleak song and uncharacteristic of her usual sweetly Only Love work but it showed what she can do with truly great material.
At times, the voice did show signs of its 64 years but Mouskouri was ably supported by the resonant Leonou as her backing singer. It came as no surprise when the diva-in-waiting was revealed as Mouskouri's own daughter, who stole the latter half of the performance.
