The Northern Secretary, Dr Mo Mowlam, has welcomed a decision by the GAA to call a special congress to review its rule banning members of the Northern Ireland security forces from joining the association.

Dr Mowlam said she agreed with the Taoiseach, Mr Ahern, when he described the GAA initiative as "another sign that we are entering a new era, and another welcome example of courageous leadership at this important time".

She described Saturday as a good day for Northern Ireland. "Representatives of the two communities have shown the vision and imagination that will give us all a fresh start after 30 years of conflict," she said.

Meanwhile, the Alliance Party also welcomed the GAA decision.
