How to tackle the increasing drugs problem across Europe is the object of a special conference jointly organised by the European Parliament, the European Commission and the Luxembourg Council Presidency, to be held in Luxembourg on November 27th to 28th.

Topics to be discussed include an assessment of the situation with regard to synthetic drugs, international comparisons by the World Health Organisation and the United Nations, grass-roots experience, prevention and research, and law enforcement. The meeting will bring together ministers, experts and MEPs concerned with the problem. Sir Jack Stewart-Clark (UK, EPP) commented: "Across the world 45 million people are addicted to illegal drugs and the annual turnover from illicit street sales exceeds $500 billion."
