Morning traffic jams in the capital are expected to last an hour longer today if the transport crisis continues, according to Mr Trevor Keegan of AA Roadwatch.

He said yesterday morning's traffic rush began at about 7 a.m. and continued until 10 a.m. and a similar situation was expected today.

He said that while the morning rush would usually last from 7.30 to 9.30, traffic in Dublin yesterday was particularly heavy and prolonged.

The city centre was unusually heavily affected. The north quays, Dorset Street, Pearse Street and St Stephen's Green were congested from early morning.

Outlying areas in Dublin affected yesterday morning and expected to be problematic today are the Naas Road, Newlands Cross, the Rock Road, the Stillorgan dual carriageway, Malahide, Fairview, Drumcondra and the Bray bypass.

There were no major accidents holding up traffic apart from the volume of vehicles on the road.

Mr Paddy Comyn of AA Road watch said that although the bus lanes have had been open to traffic, many people do not realise this and do not drive in the bus lanes.

This may also have had an impact on the morning traffic, he added.

While traffic in Limerick, Cork and Galway was heavier than normal yesterday morning, there were no serious problems, Mr Keegan added. Traffic was heavy on the Dunmore Road in Waterford.

Evening traffic in Dublin was quieter than usual yesterday, according to Mr Comyn. Amiens Street, the North Quays and Christchurch, which would normally be heavy around 5 p.m., were moving well.

He said this was possibly because commuters had left work early to beat the rush.
