BRITAIN: A British schoolgirl found hundreds of miles from home with a 46-year-old divorced man was reunited with her mother last night.

Stacey Champ (14), was found asleep in a car with family friend Mr David Milner by police in the far north of Scotland.

The teenager was flown back to Gatwick airport with a police escort this afternoon and police confirmed she had met her mother, Angela, at a secret location away from the media.

Both Stacey and Mr Milner, who worked with Stacey's mother and was a regular visitor to her house, live in the same area of Gillingham in Kent.

Earlier at Rochester police station, Angela (33), spoke of the moment she learned her daughter had been found safe. She said: "That telephone call was the most relieving telephone call I have ever had. The last four or five days have been a nightmare, a complete nightmare.

"I have no words to describe Mr Milner. He was just a friend. I used to work with him. He came to our house; he has been a frequent visitor.

"But all I can say is that I'm just so glad Stacey is coming home. I'm just looking forward to spending time with her. We have a lot to talk about.

"I have not been able to eat or sleep and my stomach has been churning." Stacey was being kept at the airport's police station before being driven to meet her mother.

A nationwide search was sparked after news of the couple's disappearance emerged last week. More than 3,000 calls were received by police about the disappearance. They had last been spotted at the weekend posing as a couple at a hotel in Blackpool. They had been missing since Thursday morning.

Insp Richard Watson, of Kent Police, said Mr Milner was under arrest and being taken back to the region, where he was to be questioned about Stacey's disappearance.

Insp Watson said: "Our main priority was to reunite Stacey with her mother and that will be done in private.

"Mr Milner will arrive back in Kent either later today or tomorrow morning and he will be questioned. We will also be talking to Stacey but only after she has spent time with her mother."

Northern Constabulary said Mr Milner was being taken under police escort to Gatwick airport on a 5.30 p.m. passenger flight from Inverness.
