Minister for Defence Mr Smith will inspect Irish troops today ahead of their departure next Tuesday for a six-month tour of duty in Sarajevo.

The 50-strong military police contingent will join the NATO-led Stabilisation Force (SFOR) in the Bosnian capital.

The troops have extensive United Nations mission experience, including tours in Lebanon, Cyprus, Kuwait and Sarajevo. Most of the troops will be under the command of Comdt Joe Scanlon.

Irish defence forces military police were first deployed to Sarajevo in June 1997 and are responsible for all military policing of SFOR headquarters.
