The Minister for Arts Heritage and Tourism Mr John O'Donoghue has launched the initial programme of events for Cork 2005, European Capital of Culture.

The year will be marked with numerous arts and cultural events with collaborations planned with 16 other European countries.

The designation was awarded to the city in 2001. The objective of the designation is  "to highlight the richness and diversity of European cultures and the features they share, as well as to promote greater mutual acquaintance between European citizens."

Preparations have been ongoing since the announcement to prepare the city for 2005.

The Minister said the designation presents Ireland with "a unique chance to put its culture to the fore of Europe, ensuring that its richness and diversity is made available to all of Europe."

It is expected that Cork will attract thousands of visitors throughout the year as a result of the designation.

Tonight's event took place in the city's Millennium Hall.
