Paul McGinley played himself out of the Diageo Championships at Gleneagles, Perthshire today.
Last year's Ryder Cup hero failed to cope with the blustery conditions yesterday, opening with a four-over 76. And instead of cancelling the deficit today, McGinley piled on more dropped shots en route to an 80 to abruptly end his Scottish campaign.
The Dubliner made a birdie at the 11th, his second, but soon waned with double bogeys at the 13th and 14th to go out in 39. McGinley's second nine was no better as he dropped five more shots to return in 41.
Denmark's Soren Kjeldsen is the one to catch at the exclusive Perthshire venue. The Dane carded a 68 to lead on four under, one shot ahead of England's Paul Broadhurst who also shot 68.
Gary Murphy and Damien McGrane are best placed of the Irish on two over. Murphy was one over through five holes while McGrane had yet to tee off.
Philip Walton added another 74 to equal his opening round. At four over he should make the cut which looks as though it will be around six over.
If so, Graeme McDowell will miss out by one shot after his 77 left him on seven over. Ronan Rafferty was a shot further back and needs to pick up at least a shot from his remaining 13 holes if he to be around for the weekend.
Peter Lawrie was never going to recover from a disastrous opening 82. He finished 16 over after today's 78 was added.
