Ms Roisin McAliskey has returned to Northern Ireland with her 10-month-old daughter after spending over 15 months in custody in England. Ms McAliskey (26) was being sought by the German authorities to face charges relating to an IRA attack on a British army base in Osnabruck in Germany in 1996. Her extradition was stopped by the British Home Secretary, Mr Jack Straw, last month.

Her mother, Ms Bernadette McAliskey, welcomed her daughter and granddaughter Loinnir at the family home in Coalisland, Co Tyrone. The former MP for Mid-Ulster said yesterday: "She [Roisin] has returned to her capacity as a private citizen and respect for her privacy would be appreciated."

Ms McAliskey had been undergoing treatment at the Maudsley psychiatric hospital in London suffering from post-natal depression and "deep post-traumatic disorder"

Ms McAliskey was arrested in Coalisland in November 1996 and was taken to Holloway Prison in London to await a decision over extradition to Germany. She was later transferred to Belmarsh high-security prison, then back to Holloway. She gave birth to her daughter in custody.
