McAleese unveils Rehabcare volunteer scheme

The President, Mary McAleese, today unveiled Rehabcare's new national volunteer programme.

The group is seeking volunteers with a range of interests to add to its network of community-based services. Volunteer activities range from the development of independent living skills to sports coaching, drama workshops and music lessons.

Rehabcare delivers more than two-and-a-half million beneficiary hours to 3,000 people with disabilities around Ireland each year.

Mrs McAleese was joined by hurler DJ Carey, Gaelic footballer Steven McDonnell and TV presenter Caroline Morahan, who are among the programme's celebrity volunteers.

Other well-known names who will be volunteering throughout the country include Mark Feehily from Westlife and Fair City actress Hilda Fay.

Mrs McAleese said: "I hope, and believe, that many people from all walks of life, will join Rehabcare's activities and will find through their involvement with this great work, a level of deep personal fulfilment that few other things in life can match."

The programme is open to volunteers over the age of 18.

"Voluntary activity in Ireland is enormous with more than 500,000 involved on a weekly basis," said Rehabcare chief executive, Angela Kerins.

"But we believe there are a lot of people out there currently not engaged in voluntary work who are able and willing to support our efforts to enable people with disabilities participate fully in community life."
