A man serving a prison sentence in Northern Ireland was questioned yesterday about punishment shootings and beatings by the special team investigating terrorist crimes dating back over decades.

The 38-year-old was taken from his cell in the top security Maghaberry Prison in Co Antrim, arrested and taken to be questioned by the Historic Enquiries Team at the police Serious Crime Suite in Antrim.

A PSNI spokeswoman said he was questioned about the shootings and beatings before being returned to the prison.

A report is being sent to the Public Prosecution Service to decide if charges should be made.

Meanwhile a 35-year-old man was arrested in west Belfast by detectives investigating the shooting of a man last month.

He was being questioned by police about the shooting of a 25-year-old man in the Summerhill Drive area of Dunmurry.

Three masked men had broken into the victim’s home on September 29 and shot him a number of times.
