A Dundalk man charged with having an explosive device at a hotel outside Drogheda has been freed on bail by the Special Criminal Court.

Justin McCarthy (28), of Farndreg, Dundalk, Co Louth, was charged with the unlawful possession of an explosive substance - namely an improvised explosive device with a timing power unit - at the Europa hotel, Painstown, Drogheda, Co Meath, on November 25th last.

He was also charged with membership of an illegal organisation styling itself the Irish Republican Army, otherwise Oglaigh na hEireann, otherwise the IRA, on May 16th this year.

He was freed on an independent surety of €20,000 and his own bond of €1,000.

Mr McCarthy was ordered to sign on daily at Dundalk Garda Station, to stay at his address in Farnderg and to obey a curfew between the hours of 11pm and 7.00am.

He was remanded on bail until June 27th.
