London - A man who murdered an asylum seeker in a "cowardly and totally unprovoked" attack was yesterday beginning a life sentence.
Scott Burrell (26), from Glasgow, was found guilty of murdering Mr Firsat Dag in a park in the city's Sighthill area, following a six-day trial. Mr Dag, a 25-year-old Kurdish refugee who had been in Glasgow for a matter of weeks, died in hospital as a result of a single stab wound to his chest.
Burrell was also found guilty, at the High Court in Glasgow, of attempting to murder German tourist Mr Stephan Herold (36) in Glasgow city centre in what trial judge Lord Kingarth described as "mindless and vicious attack on a visitor to this city".
Jailing Burrell for life with the recommendation that he serve a minimum of 14 years, the judge told him the attacks "were part of a violent, drunken spree through the city when you were armed with a knife and prepared to use it".
