Judge Martin Nolan said it was a particularly violent assault on a young man who was affected physically and psychologically.

He imposed a 21-month jail term backdated to when Geraghty first went into custody.

Mr Glass suffered a badly sprained wrist and thumb in the attack as well as cuts and scrapes. He stated in a victim impact report that his sense of personal security was affected by the incident and he is now very concerned when walking alone at night.

Garda Andrew Lake told prosecuting counsel Melanie Greally that Mr Glass was working in the Criminal Courts of Justice until 6.15pm before he met some friends in a bar.

They went to several premises before the victim walked home at about 12.30am. As he was walking towards Doyle’s Corner he was hit on the back and stumbled forward.

He saw Geraghty coming towards him and another man behind him.

Two gardaí were passing by and one helped Mr Glass while the other chased and caught Geraghty.
