British police have arrested a 54-year-old man on suspicion of murder following the discovery of two bodies in a pond.

The bodies of the two men were found by police in Reed Pond, near Tennyson Avenue in Canterbury, Kent, yesterday.

The first was spotted by a member of the public who contacted the emergency services at around 12pm while the second was found by police divers at 9.40pm.

A Kent Police spokeswoman said: “Police search and forensic teams remain at the scene at this time, and officers from the Kent and Essex serious crime directorate major crime team have set up an incident room to investigate these deaths.

“The deaths are currently being treated as unexplained pending post-mortems which are due to take place in the next 24 hours.

“A 54-year-old man from Canterbury has been arrested on suspicion of murder and is currently in police custody.”

Chief Inspector Steve Barlow, the district commander for Canterbury, said: “We are appealing for anyone who may have been in the immediate vicinity of Reed Pond in Canterbury between 5pm on Friday January 27 and 11am on Monday January 30 to get in contact with us if they witnessed anything unusual or if they have any information which they think could help this investigation.”

One of the bodies is believed to be that of 17-year-old Hugo Wenn who went missing last Friday night, sources confirmed.

He was reported missing to police at the weekend after he was supposed to have met friends at a pub in Canterbury but sent a text message saying he was leaving before any of them arrived.

Friends of Hugo took to Twitter and Facebook appealing for help in tracing him. Formal identification has not yet taken place, a police spokeswoman said.

Detectives are working on the belief that Hugo, the unidentified second person and the suspect held on suspicion of murder were acquaintances.

Reed Pond is on British ministry of defence land behind Howe Barracks but MoD officials ruled out any connection between the deaths and the armed forces.

An Army spokesman said: “It is extremely sad news that two bodies have been discovered on the training area behind Howe Barracks in Canterbury.
