A school vice principal arrested on suspicion of the murder last night of five family members in California has been freed without charge.

Police said they still consider Mr Vincent Brothers (41) a suspect but did not have enough evidence to charge him.

He was taken into custody in Elizabeth City, North Carolina, where he had emerged a day after the bodies of his estranged wife, mother-in-law and three children were found at their Bakersfield home.

Detectives from Bakersfield, 90 miles north of Los Angeles, flew across the country to interview Mr Brothers earlier yesterday after he turned himself in to Elizabeth City police.

Bakersfield police, who had been hunting for him since the five bodies were discovered in a house early on Tuesday morning, have said it was not clear when he traveled to North Carolina but that he had family members there.
