A man drowned in a Co Mayo river at the weekend while taking a walk in the grounds of a nursing home where he was a resident.

The body of Michael Crean (68) was found on Saturday by a search party of gardaí and civilians in the Glore river, near Kiltimagh. It is believed Mr Crean, a single man, fell into the river and died accidentally.

Mr Crean, a native of Burren, Castlebar, was in the habit of taking a daily walk in the grounds of Ballinamore Nursing Home, which is bounded on one side by the river. His body was found on Saturday. He had been missing since about 10.30am on Friday. The remains were taken to Mayo General Hospital in Castlebar, where a postmortem was to have been held yesterday.
