A 19-year-old man died and a teenage girl was seriously injured today after falling from cliffs at Malin Head, Co Donegal.
The pair were making their way from a car park near the townland of Ballygorman to an isolated cove known as Sandport beach at around 1am when they fell more than sixty-foot down a sheer drop.
They had been following a steep path down the cliff when the young man slipped on steps, lost his footing and they both fell.
It is understood he was killed instantly. The girl was rushed to Altnagelvin Hospital in Derry and later transferred to the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast.
Her condition is described as critical. A garda spokeswoman said: "A young man and a woman were making there way down from cliffs to the beach and they seem to have slipped and fallen. They young man was pronounced dead at the scene."
The young man was from the village of Bree, on the Inishowen peninsula. The girl is not believed to be from Malin but her family has strong ties to the area.
It is understood she had returned to the area on holiday from England with relatives.
