Mr Byrne arrived in court from Wexford Garda station. The court was told that he had made no reply when charged. His solicitor, Anna Maria O'Donnell, said her client was "not working at the moment" and requested free legal aid, which was granted.

She also asked that Mr Byrne be granted bail and said he was "prepared to live with his mother in Clondalkin and to surrender his passport".

Insp Pat McDonald opposed bail "due to the seriousness of the charge and the fact that the accused has only lived in Wexford for eight weeks".

Judge Donnchadh Ó Buachalla remanded Mr Byrne in custody to Cloverhill Prison. He will appear before the court again next Tuesday.

Supt John Roche said the results of a postmortem were not being released "for operational reasons".
