Rouen - An 87-year-old Frenchman went on trial yesterday charged with strangling and beating his 83-year-old wife to death after finding love letters from a man aged 80 under her pillow.

A retired hairdresser, Mr Paul Faglin, told the court his wife Lucienne died of natural causes on May 6th two years ago. He said he reported her death only two days later because he feared it would prevent him from being the veterans' standard-bearer at the May 8th second World War armistice ceremonies.
