A leading Portadown loyalist, Mark Fulton, has claimed that his human rights are being violated by prison authorities at Maghaberry Prison, Co Antrim.

Fulton, a member of the LVF who is serving a four-year sentence for arms offences, claims he has been unfairly kept in solitary confinement in Maghaberry's punishment and segregation unit because the authorities cannot protect him from republican prisoners. His former close associate Billy Wright was murdered by the INLA in the Maze Prison.

Fulton has been held in solitary confinement since December 1998. He has now been transferred to specially adapted accommodation for high-profile prisoners.
