Los Angeles has been selected to host the next athletics World Cup in 2006, International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) president Lamine Diack announced today.
"My first visit (as IAAF president) in December 1999 was to the United States and I've worked for a long time for the World Cup to be held there," Diack told a press conference before this weekend's World Cup.
"The priority was to go to the United States because there are enough competitions in Europe," he added after the Californian city beat off challenges from Istanbul and Brussels.
The stadium has not yet been announced but the competition will take place at the beginning of March 2006.
The athletics showcase takes place every four years and this year's event in Madrid brings together athletes from five continents.
