London's City Airport is likely to reopen tomorrow after a three-day closure following Tuesday’s attacks in New York and Washington.

A government spokesman said flight paths to and from the airport would be changed to avoid the nearby Canary Wharf, the east London skyscraper that houses the British offices of many of the world's biggest financial services companies.

He said Transport Secretary Mr Stephen Byers told ministers that restrictions on light aircraft and helicopters announced on Tuesday had been lifted overnight.

But a no-fly box over central London remained in place.

Airports had moved to the highest alert for personal searches but would scale this down as appropriate where possible, the spokesman said.

Three other London airports far from the city centre - Heathrow, Gatwick and Stansted - have remained open since the attacks, although there have been no flights to or from the United States.
