Ms Monica Lewinsky has returned to Washington to be with her mother and to prepare for her own appearance before a grand jury for questioning about her relationship with President Clinton and whether he urged her to deny it.

She is said to be upset at the effect of the grand jury hearing on her mother, Ms Marcia Lewis, who had to interrupt her testimony last week to recuperate from the ordeal.

Ms Lewis is expected to resume her testimony on Tuesday.

Mr William Ginsburg, her lawyer, is still seeking total immunity for Ms Lewinsky so that she cannot be indicted for perjury.

This committee would be the one to take the first steps in any attempt to impeach President Clinton based on evidence that he committed perjury or suborned others to do so.
