A run organised by members of the legal profession in aid of homeless children in Dublin and Calcutta will take place in Phoenix Park this Saturday.
Up to 1,500 runners are expected to take part in this year's 10-kilometre Calcutta Run, which is organised by the Law Society and sponsored by Vodafone Ireland.
Last year's run raised over €200,000, which was divided between GOAL, which runs a large street children programme in Calcutta, and Father Peter McVerry's Arrupe Society, which helps homeless Dublin children.
Goal's director, Mr John O Shea, congratulated the organisers, saying: "This is one of the biggest fundraising events in GOAL's calendar and every year it just seems to get better and better".
Mr O'Shea said: "I want to thank the sponsors Vodafone and all the participants from the bottom of my heart for giving up their time to raise funds for homeless children. These children are the most vulnerable of people and the money raised by this event will hopefully give many of them something to smile about for a change".
"GOAL is looking after 8,500 street children in Calcutta and the money raised by this event will help transform others from abused and miserable waifs to happy, healthy children with an education and a future," he said.
Participants in the event are advised to assemble at the Law Society, Blackhall Place at 2.00 p.m. on Saturday.
