Paul Lawrie’s 40-foot putt from the valley of sin on the final hole at St Andrews to win the Dunhill Links Championship last month was named the European Tour Shot of the Year today.

The putt was reminiscent of Constantino Rocca’s putt from almost the same spot during the 1995 Open to force a play-off with John Daly.

Lawrie needed to get up and down in two to tie with Ernie Els, but instead the Aberdonian holed it to claim the biggest winner’s cheque of the year on tour - £551,000 sterling.

Lawrie said: "I reckoned the putt was a double-breaker with a bit of left to right at the start and from right to left near the hole.
