Mr Brendan McFarlane was yesterday remanded until next February by the Special Criminal Court in Dublin on charges connected with the 1983 kidnap of the supermarket executive, Mr Don Tidey.

Mr McFarlane (47), of Jamaica Street, Belfast, is charged with falsely imprisoning Mr Tidey and with possession of a gun with intent to endanger life at Derrada Wood, Ballinamore, Co Leitrim, between November 25th and December 16th, 1983.

The court remanded him on continuing bail of £100,000 until February 9th after hearing that the High Court had granted an order preventing his trial, which was due to go ahead on November 23rd.
