KINSHASA - More than 640 people were killed in Kinshasa in late May during the rebel takeover of the then Zairean capital, the national human rights association said here yesterday.

The group said the massacres took place when troops loyal to Mr Laurent Kabila took control of the city, subsequently renaming Zaire the Democratic Republic of Congo. It said most of the victims were members of the Zairean armed forces and looters as well as innocent civilians.
