BRITAIN: Chris Evans was branded a "liar" and a "prima donna" yesterday by a High Court judge as he lost his multi-million pound damages claim against Virgin Radio.

The former DJ and television presenter lost his long-running case in London against the station after a judge ruled his employers were justified in sacking him following a drinking binge.

Evans was not in court but later said he was "disappointed but philosophical" about losing the case. He appeared relaxed last night appeared as he sat in a bar near his Surrey home with his wife, the former chart star Billie Piper. Sipping a large glass of Coke, Evans smiled and said: "I'm fine."

As well as the damning judgment, Evans (37), the former owner and star presenter of Virgin Radio, now faces a huge legal bill and another hearing to decide how much he must pay the station for the harm he caused.

Mr Justice Lightman said Evans had breached the terms of his contract, primarily by missing a series of broadcasts after highly-publicised drinking sprees.

In a lengthy statement criticising Evans's personality, he went on: "He is given to extremes: moderation has no part to play. Drinking to excess is part of his lifestyle. "   - (PA)
