The recovery in the global job market could lag that of the world economy by 18 months, World Trade Organisation director-general Pascal Lamy said today.

"Some time will pass between the recovery and the improvement of the job market," Mr Lamy told Canal+ television, adding that this period would be "in the order of 18 months."

"Tomorrow's growth will not take place with the same kinds of jobs as those of yesterday," he said.

Mr Lamy said last month that global trade growth would be 9.5 per cent this year.

He said there would be significant disparities between continents as far as the recovery was concerned.

He declined to comment on whether China was keeping the exchange rate of its yuan currency artificially low.
