An army mutiny in the Ivory Coast "is being brought under control," an aide to President Laurent Gbagbo said in Rome.
"The security forces have intervened, and the situation is being brought under control. The ringleaders of the mutiny have been clearly identified, and will be brought to justice," Mr Gbagbo's spokesman said. Mr Gbagbo is on an official visit to Rome.
This morning, soldiers facing demobilisation mutinied in Abidjan, where heavy gunfire was heard in several sectors.
A soldier said some 750 soldiers had staged the mutiny in Abidjan and in the central city of Bouake, 400 kilometres north of Abidjan to protest against their demobilisation.

Gunfire was also heard in the northern town of Korhogo, according to reports.
