The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) has launched an investigation into suspected mafia-linked illegal betting and match fixing.

Naples-based police are investigating 12 clubs in a probe into suspected match-fixing relating to games in the top flight Serie A as well as lower division matches.

A source close to the investigation said they had telephone evidence indicating that players were involved with illegal betting activities on specific games.

FIGC president Franco Carraro said the ruling body was now investigating the claims and would take action against anyone found to have been involved in illegal gambling.

Serie A club Siena said yesterday that police had visited their offices and that they had suspended two players, striker Nicola Ventola and defender Roberto D'Aversa, who have been named in the investigation.

The club said they had "never had any reason to doubt the motives" of the players but had suspended them in order to "grant them absolute freedom of action to defend their professional reputation."

The Naples source said Serie A clubs Chievo, Lecce and Reggina were among those being probed but each club said that while their offices had been visited neither they nor any of their players had been formally placed under investigation and documents had not been taken away.
