An investigation has been launched following the death of an Italian worker in an industrial accident in Co Clare this morning.

The 42-year-old man, who has not been named, was fatally injured when a trench collapsed on him in Clarecastle.

He was employed by an Italian construction company that had been subcontracted by Bord Gais to carry out work on the natural gas pipeline to the west.

The injured man was brought to Ennis General Hospital where he died a short time later. The man's body was removed to the Mid Western Regional Hospital in Limerick this afternoon for a post mortem examination.

Gardaí in Ennis and the Health and Safety Authority have launched separate investigations into the incident. HSA officials were on site this morning.
